In 2023, there were numerous examples of acute water shortages:
In southern France, for example, around 40,000 people turned on their taps towards the end of the summer and nothing came out. The result of a very hot summer with a long drought. Almost 200 municipalities had to be supplied with tank water or bottled mineral water. Watering gardens, sports facilities, agricultural land and even filling swimming pools was prohibited.
Many regions in Germany were also struggling with extreme water shortages: in the early summer of 2023, parts of Bavaria, the southern Black Forest, Lusatia in Brandenburg and the coastal areas of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on the Baltic Sea were already severely affected.
